“Intestinal microbiota in obesity and metabolic syndrome. How to prove causality?”


Philippe Gérard obtained his PhD in Microbiology in 1999 from the University of Nancy. After a two-year experience as a postdoctorate, he got a permanent position as a researcher at INRA (French National Institute for Agricultural Research) in 2001. Then, he has developed expertise in the study of human intestinal microbial functions using germ-free animal models, focusing primarily on the involvement of these bacterial functions in metabolic diseases. He is currently INRA Research Director and head of the research team “Food, Gut Microbiota, Metabolic and Brain Diseases” (AMIPEM) from the MICALIS Institute (Jouy-en-Josas, France). His team recently established that germfree mice are resistant to diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance and that gut microbiota determines Non alcoholic fatty liver disease and contributes to alcoholic liver disease. Since 2014, he has been a member of the Scientific Council of the French Nutrition Society, and a Councillor of the International Association for Gnotobiology. He authored more than 50 publications, reviews and book chapters, and has given more than 30 invited lectures since 2011 on gut microbiota in health and disease.
