Artificial Intelligence: a necessary evil or an opportunity?

FORMAT 

Five industry leaders will be invited to share their views on artificial intelligence. They will expand on their outlook towards these enabling technologies, if they use them or if they plan on using them on the short, middle or long term. In their specific sector, do they perceive these technologies as a threat or as an opportunity? Afterwards, attendees will have the possibility to address written questions to the panel, via the panel facilitator.

Facilitator – Dr. Fadia Naim, CEO of Cintech agroalimentaire

Biographical Sketch

Présidente et directrice générale de Cintech agroalimentaire, un Centre de transfert de technologie spécialisé en transformation agroalimentaire, Mme Fadia Naim possède une solide expertise en recherche et innovation. Elle détient un doctorat en microbiologie et une maîtrise en sciences vétérinaires. Avant de joindre l’équipe de Cintech en 2007 en tant que directrice scientifique, Mme Naim a réalisé un stage postdoctoral spécialisé en validation des procédés alimentaires à Agriculture Canada (Saint-Hyacinthe), où elle a par la suite occupé un poste de spécialiste en technologie alimentaire.

À la direction générale de Cintech depuis 2011, Mme Naim a mis en place et gère actuellement une équipe multidisciplinaire de chercheurs et de professionnels hautement qualifiée, qui accompagne les entreprises dans leurs projets d’innovation et leurs opérations quotidiennes. Elle a développé la stratégie de recherche appliquée en partenariat avec les entreprises pour répondre à leurs besoins actuels et anticiper leurs besoins futurs en termes de technologies et de produits. Son équipe mène plusieurs projets de recherche, mobilisateurs et individuels, visant à accélérer l’innovation et son adoption pour donner aux entreprises partenaires des avantages concurrentiels.

En tant qu’experte reconnue en innovation, Mme Naim est très impliquée dans son milieu professionnel. Elle participe régulièrement à des tables rondes et des consultations touchant l’industrie agroalimentaire, et siège sur trois Conseils d’administration. Elle est membre du regroupement stratégique de chercheurs de l’INAF, membre du jury DUX et du jury SIAL innovation, et présidente du COPR-bioalimentaire du CRIBIQ.  En 2015, elle a fondé Innovia, qui est devenu le rendez-vous biennal incontournable de l’innovation dans l’industrie agroalimentaire.

Moderator – Dr. Jean-Claude Dufour, Dean of the Faculté des sciences de l’agriculture et de l’alimentation, Université Laval

Biographical Sketch

Jean-Claude Dufour owns a bachelor degree in agronomy (1971), a master degree in agricultural economics (1973) and a Ph.D in business from University Laval. He took his specialization in food marketing and distribution from Michigan State University in 1975. He is also Certified Director since 2017 from Le Collège des administrateurs de l’Université Laval.

He begins a professional career at the Quebec Ministry of Agriculture and Food in 1973. He pursues his career at University Laval in 1977 as a teacher in food marketing and distribution. More than 130 students graduated at the master and Ph.D levels under his supervision since that. He has been invited speaker for more than 600 speaches in Canada and around the world. In 2006, he co-authored a book published by Chenelière, Markegting and Services.

He has chaired the Department of Agricultural Economics between 1995 and 1999. He became Dean of the Faculty of Agriculture and Food at once between 1999 and 2003. He has realized a second mandate as Dean of the Faculty between 2011 and  2015 and is still the  Dean for a third mandate until 2019.

He has been expert consultant for many companies and Ministry. He also acted as member of several Boards of administrators of many food processing companies, risk capital investors, and marketing consultants.

Jean-Claude Dufour is member of l’Ordre des Agronomes du Québec (1971) and the Food Distribution Research Society (1984) where he took the Presidency of the World congress in 2005. In 2001, he has been honoured of «le mérite interprofessionnel» by l’Office des professions du Québec and  l’Ordre des agronomes du Québec (OAQ). In June 2011, he has been officially recognized «Commandeur de l’Ordre du Mérite Agronomique» by l’OAQ. In 2015 the Quebec Food Processing Council recognized him  as the food personality of the year giving him «Le Trophé André Latour».

Biographical Sketch

In 2005 Marc Hamilton founded Laboratoires EnvironeX.Today he is the CEO of EnvironeX Group – the largest Quebec-owned analytical laboratory currently employing over 300 specialists, technicians, managers and professionals. His organization is responsible for over 1,5 million microbiological and chemical analyses per year in the environmental, agrifood, health and pharmaceutical sectors.

With more than 20 years of experience in the development of new companies in environment and health sciences, Marc Hamilton can be thought of as a natural visionary entrepreneur who possesses a knack for instrumentation and innovation with the sole objective of improving science. He is among the few scientific managers whose innovative approach to the industry creates new methods and business solutions in the fields of medical and public health.

Founder and CEO of Bio-Médic between 1998 and 2014, Marc Hamilton firmly established his medical laboratory among the leaders of the field in Canada. In this role he built the software Bio-Analyse, in compliance with section 21 CFR part 11 of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) electronic standards provisions, which earned him an award in the Web Strategies Category at the 2004 Gala des Mercuriades (a prestigious business event in Quebec) as well as another award in the B2B Category at the 2002 Gala des affaires électroniques.

Marc Hamilton’s expertise is regularly sought after by the media for comments and analysis on subjects relating to the environment, especially drinking water and air quality. Given his company’s acquisitions in 2015, the EnvironeX Group CEO will broaden the scope of his media commentary to include the agrifood, health, and pharmaceuticals fields.

Biographical Sketch

Dr Pouliot, oeuvre dans la recherche et le développement de produits laitiers depuis plus de 25 ans. Après des études graduées au Centre STELA de l’université Laval, sur lefractionnement des protéines du lait, il a continué sa carrière en milieu académique sur différents projets toujours à l’interface de la recherche et l’industrie laitière. En 1999, il joint l’équipe de R&D d’Agropur à titre d’Agent R&D, et travaille sur plusieurs projets d’ingrédients, de boissons et de technologies avant de prendre la direction de l’équipe. VicePrésident depuis 10 ans, son équipe s’est repositionnée pour embrasser les nouveaux outils d’innovation ouverte pour accélérer son développement.

 

Vanessa Grondin, VP,  Global Food and Beverage Intelligent Supply Chain at OPTEL GROUP

Biographical Sketch

Vanessa Grondin is a food engineer who has worked in the food industry for over ten years. Her interests lie in innovative packaging materials and food safety which, beyond the preservation process and packaging integrity, also considers the product lifecycle, including packaging breakdown.

Involved in her community, she is a member of the board of Moisson Québec, and is president and co-founder of the Executive MBA Alumni at Université Laval. She served on the organizing committee for the 2016 Junior Chamber International World Congress, which was awarded the Fidéide for Business Event of the Year by the Québec City Chamber of Commerce in 2017.

Biographical Sketch

Dufour est diplômé en agroéconomie de l’Université Laval et possède une mineure en marketing des HEC.  Il possède une vaste connaissance et expérience du secteur agroalimentaire.  Depuis plus de 25 ans, ce dernier a œuvré au sein de nombreuses entreprises et organismes liés au domaine agricole et agroalimentaire.  À titre de consultant, il a aidé de nombreuses entreprises dans le domaine de la mise en marché.  Ses compétences sont reconnues par l’Université Laval ou il a enseigné pendant 3 ans à titre de professeur invité, les cours de marketing agroalimentaire et de marketing stratégique.  Depuis 18 ans, il se consacre à temps plein au développement des ventes, marketing et innovation chez Fruit d’Or.

Biographical Sketch

Michel Sirgent is the father of two exceptional young women. His passion for nature defines his hobbies and his career. He has worked in the health products industry for close to 30 years.

After 4 years on the leadership team of Les Marchés Tau, he spent 5 years at Boehringer Ingleheim/Quest in the self-medication division. Before the arrival of reinforcements, he was responsible for all natural product retailers and pharmacies across Quebec.

In 2007, Mr. Sirgent was invited by the Canadian Ministry of Agriculture to speak at Bio2007-Boston on behalf of the entire Canadian Functional ingredient sector to promote innovation and value added manufacturing.

His knowledge, experience and his leadership in the natural health product industry also served him for the 5 years he spent on the board of directors of the Canadian Health Food Association. During his tenure, he held the positions of Director, Vice Chair and Chair of the countries largest natural products trade association, representing over 2000 sector members.

For the past 20+ years, Michel Sirgent he has been with Bio-K+ international inc, a pioneer in science-based, clinically proven probiotics.  Working for entrepreneurial organisation, Mr. Sirgent has been involved in every facet of the company’s development including but not limited to business development in retail and medical channels, regulatory affairs, media and consumer relations, education to health professionals and product development.

His vision for probiotics and more specifically for Bio-K+ is that of bridging the world of natural health products with safe and effective medicine and being the best of both for a new and recognised medical model.
