“Menopause and body composition: Is increased adiposity always accompanied by deteriorated health?”


Professor Doucet is an expert in the field of body weight regulation in humans. He is a Professor at the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Ottawa, Canada. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physiology and Endocrinology at Université Laval in Québec City in 2001. His current research program focuses specifically on understanding the contribution of physiological and endocrine factors to the regulation of energy stores. He is also interested by the effects of nutrition, eating behaviour and physical activity on energy balance. He has published numerous articles in refereed journals, such as the International Journal of Obesity, Obesity, the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the British Journal of Nutrition and the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition amongst others. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of the British Journal of Nutrition, Frontiers in Physiology and the Journal of Nutritional Sciences.


Menopause and body composition: Is increased adiposity always accompanied by deteriorated health?

Menopause is normally seen as a period of life associated with changes in body composition that might be conducive of health ailments associated to increases in adiposity. Accordingly, many studies have documented the effects of menopause on these said changes. However, most of the studies that have looked into this, have done so using cross-sectional design. Results from our group have highlighted that there are indeed changes in adiposity in a group of women who were followed for 5 years during the menopausal transition. An important finding of our investigation is that changes in body composition are not systematically associated with deteriorated health profiles, for as long as physical activity is maintained during this important life transition. Women also experienced increases appetite during the menopausal transition. In our latest investigation, we performed a 10-year post-menopause follow-up in a large subset of the same group of women. Results from our second prospective study seem to show that some of the early postmenopausal beneficial effects seem to dissappear with the increasing number of years after menopause
